The 38-year-old Dutchman is expected to be out of action until the end of September, giving Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak the chance to impress in his absence. He broke the bones on 30 July while saving a Danijel Pranjić penalty in United's 7-6 shoot-out defeat against FC Bayern München in the final of a friendly tournament at the Fußball Arena München. United, beaten finalists last season, start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the group stage, and meet Chelsea FC in the Community Shield this weekend.
