Extra year
Torres had agreed the new deal in May which gives the club and player the option to extend his stay by a year when his initial contract expires in 2013. The 25-year-old UEFA EURO 2008™ winner joined Liverpool from Club Atlético de Madrid for €30m in 2007 and has scored 50 goals in 84 appearances for Rafael Benítez's side.
New season
"Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club," Benítez said in May. "He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game." Liverpool begin their season at Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday and discover their UEFA Champions League group-stage opposition on 27 August.
