Matchday 1 Team of the Week
Player Rater, as presented by Heineken, gives uefa.com users the chance to vote on the best players in each UEFA Champions League match this season.
Goalkeeper
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
Buffon's outstanding performance against FC Girondins de Bordeaux frustrated his opponents so much that at the end they were thankful for a point in their 1-1 draw in Turin despite creating ample opportunities to win the game.
Defender
Maicon (FC Internazionale Milano)
Part of a defence that managed the rarest of things, keeping a clean sheet against FC Barcelona. Not only did the 28-year-old Brazilian keep the likes of Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimović in check, but he also pushed forward down the right to good effect.
Eliaquim Mangala (R. Standard de Liège)
The 18-year-old marked his UEFA Champions League debut in fine style, scoring just three minutes into the Group H opener against Arsenal FC. Although he was powerless to stop the Gunners' late surge that saw them run out 3-2 winners, the French centre-back gave an assured performance which earmarks him as a star of the future.
Daniel Van Buyten (FC Bayern München)
The Belgian international defender has a knack of coming up with key goals in the UEFA Champions League and he was at it again in Israel on Tuesday, breaking the deadlock against Maccabi Haifa FC. At the other end, a typically combative display kept Bayern's goal intact and helped the German side start with an excellent away win.
Aly Cissokho (Olympique Lyonnais)
Running at full tilt down the left flank from the first minute to the last, Cissokho was a key figure in Lyon's 1-0 win against ACF Fiorentina. The 22-year-old, who was signed from FC Porto in the summer, is already proving an able replacement for Fabio Grosso.
Midfielders
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk (FC Bayern München)
The summer signing from FC Zenit St. Petersburg has fitted in seamlessly at Bayern, filling the boots of the injured Mark van Bommel. Sitting just in front of the back four, the Ukrainian international pulled the strings against Maccabi allowing the danger men further upfield to go about their work.
Zvjezdan Misimović (VfL Wolfsburg)
A playmaker with tremendous vision, the 27-year-old Bosnian international was a target for many of the continent's top clubs in the summer. He showed why in the German champions' 3-1 win over PFC CSKA Moskva, threading a pass through the CSKA defence for Grafite to open the scoring.
Renato (Sevilla FC)
Renato proved a decisive figure during the 2-0 win over FC Unirea Urziceni. Luis Fabiano's opening goal came thanks to a pass from his Brazilian team-mate then, with 20 minutes to go, the 30-year-old was on hand to head in Sevilla's second.
Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)
The man in the middle through which Milan's moves flowed. When given time on the ball there are few more dangerous passers in the game. Filippo Inzaghi scored twice in the 2-1 win over Olympique de Marseille, but should have had three after being picked out by a trademark free-kick from the pass master.
Forwards
Grafite (VfL Wolfsburg)
The 30-year-old was the Bundesliga's top scorer during Wolfsburg's run to their first German title last season and he took the step up to the UEFA Champions League in his stride with the first hat-trick in this season's competition.
Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan)
When it comes to being in the right place at the right time there is no striker quite like Inzaghi, who at 36 scored his record 67th and 68th goals in European club competition in Milan's 2-1 win at Olympique de Marseille. Proving that age is no obstacle to success, another veteran, Clarence Seedorf set up both.
