SL Benfica have continued strengthening for next season by signing 21-year-old central defender Fábio Faria from Rio Ave FC.

The Portuguese Under-21 international becomes the Eagles' fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Roberto Jiménez, Nicólas Gaitán and Franco Jara, although no details of the latest transfer have been made public. "It's a dream come true," said Faria. "I've wanted to play for a club as big as Benfica for so long. I will work to try to please coach [Jorge] Jesus."

The Lisbon giants started pre-season training today having also awarded goalkeeper José Moreira a new three-year contract while Quim has been allowed to depart as a free agent after six seasons at the club. Moreira, who joined in 1999 but has made only 36 league appearances in the past six seasons, said: "Benfica trust me and I trust in Benfica. I'm extra motivated to show the fans that Moreira, who everybody loves, is in good shape and can play in Benfica's goal." The Portuguese titleholders will participate in the UEFA Champions League group stage this autumn.
