Manchester United FC have made a surprise swoop for 20-year-old Vitória SC striker Bebé, a youngster who has never played higher than the third tier of Portuguese football.

The 20-year-old moves to Old Trafford for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of €9m. A fast, technically gifted striker, Bebé was recommended to United manager Sir Alex Ferguson by former assistant and now Portugal coach, Carlos Queiroz.

It marks an incredible rise for Bebé, who until June was living at Casa do Gaiato, an orphanage on the outskirts of Lisbon. He spent last season at CF Estrela da Amadora in the third tier before moving to top-flight Guimarães six weeks ago.
