Calf strain rules out Valencia's Mathieu

A calf injury sustained in the recent Spanish Liga victory against Getafe CF could rule regular left-back Jérémy Mathieu out of Valencia CF's two remaining Group C fixtures.

Defender Jérémy Mathieu could miss Valencia CF's last two UEFA Champions League Group C fixtures after being sidelined for three weeks with a calf strain.

The left-back, 27, sustained the injury during the first half of the 2-0 Liga home victory against Getafe CF on 14 November. The Spanish club say he may be out of action for 20 days, meaning he will sit out the visit of Bursaspor next Wednesday and possibly the Matchday 6 trip to Manchester United FC on 7 December.

Frenchman Mathieu has played every minute of Valencia's four UEFA Champions League games to date, helping the team to seven points and second place in Group C behind Manchester United. Meanwhile, forward Juan Mata remains a doubt for Saturday's Liga match at Villarreal CF as he recovers from the right knee complaint that forced him to skip Spain's 4-0 friendly loss in Portugal.
