Manchester United FC have made their third signing of the summer after goalkeeper David de Gea left Club Atlético de Madrid for Old Trafford in a transfer worth about €21m.

De Gea, fresh from adding a UEFA European Under-21 Championship winners' medal to the U17 equivalent he picked up in 2007, has signed a five-year deal with last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up. He is seen as a long-term successor to the retiring Edwin van der Sar.

"I feel very proud and I can't wait to start playing here," De Gea said. "When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very happy. I saw their interest as an extra motivation to work even harder. It's a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I'm keen to do my best and show what I can do."

Though still only 20, De Gea has been a regular starter for Atlético since breaking into the side less than two years ago, making 57 Liga appearances following his debut against FC Porto in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League group stage. In addition to winning international honours at junior level, De Gea helped his home-town club Atlético to glory in the 2010 UEFA Europa League, when they overcame Fulham FC 2-1 in the final.

De Gea, who will challenge Anders Lindegaard and Tomasz Kuszczak for the No1 jersey at United, follows Blackburn Rovers FC defender Phil Jones and winger Ashley Young from Aston Villa FC as the third acquisition by Sir Alex Ferguson this summer.
