With Rémy Vercroutre and Anthony Lopes both sidelined by injury, Olympique Lyonnais have brought in a new back-up goalkeeper in Matthieu Valverde.

The former FC Girondins de Bordeaux custodian has signed a short-term contract until 30 June next year and will provide experienced cover for French international Hugo Lloris following the long-term injuries sustained by Vercoutre and Lopes.

A former Under-21 international, Valverde had been a free agent since leaving Toulouse FC in the summer. He has made 69 appearances in Ligue 1 and featured in three UEFA Champions League games for Bordeaux. "Bordeaux were a big club, but Lyon are a level above," said Valverde. "Their results for the last ten years prove it, and I am very happy to be part of this squad. I think that OL are a great club that will allow me to bounce back."

The 28-year-old is eligible for the UEFA Champions League and is part of Rémi Garde's squad to face Real Madrid CF in Group D on Wednesday night.
