FC Shakhtar Donetsk have confirmed the signing of attacking midfielder Fred from Brazilian club SC Internacional in a deal worth around €15m.
The 20-year-old, who registered seven goals in 33 league appearances for the Porto Alegre side, has agreed a five-year contract with the Ukrainian champions. "I know Shakhtar very well, they are a huge club. I have followed their progress in Europe and am very happy to make the move," he said.
"I already know some players here like Taison, Luiz Adriano and Douglas Costa. They are my friends. My task is to break into the first team and play a part in the Champions League. I will also do my best to help this club succeed and fulfill its goal of winning the Champions League."
Fred could make his debut for the Pitmen on 9 July against FC Chornomorets Odesa in the Ukrainian Super Cup. His arrival follows that of fellow Brazilians Fernando (Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense) and 21-year-old striker Wellington Nem.
