AC Milan are likely to be without Stephan El Shaarawy for at least half of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie with Club Atlético de Madrid after the forward underwent surgery on an injured foot on Saturday.

The Italian international had already spent three months of the season on the sidelines after suffering injury on 1 September. He now faces a further lengthy lay-off after undergoing surgery on a fractured metatarsal in his right foot. A statement from the Rossoneri said El Shaarawy "will be sidelined for around ten weeks", which would mean he misses the club's last-16 first leg against Atlético on 19 February.

If rehabilitation goes as planned, El Shaarawy may once again be available for selection in time for the 11 March trip to the Spanish capital.
