Marvel at Zidane's breathtaking volley

"To score in such a way in the [UEFA] Champions League, if it has to happen once in a lifetime, well it happened that night in the final," said Zinédine Zidane of his breathtaking volley in the 2002 decider at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

A stadium that had played host to the famous 1960 showpiece – when Madrid's Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás struck seven times between them against Eintracht Frankfurt in a dazzling display of attacking football – was the stage for the Whites to outwit another German side, Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

That they did was in large part down to Zidane, who majestically scored the clincher in a 2-1 Merengues success. Unsurprisingly, it is a leading contender in UEFA's best goal poll.

The playmaker was sauntering into the Leverkusen penalty area when Roberto Carlos made one of his trademark runs down the left, hooking a cross back to the edge of the box. Eyes fixed on the dropping ball, concentration personified, Zidane watched it on to his left foot, hammering a shot past Jörg Butt.

"That volley was a great moment for me, as I had not won that trophy before," said the former French international. "So yes, it is one of my great memories, along with lifting the [FIFA] World Cup [in 2006] because, as a player, your dream is to play in it. When you win it and lift the trophy it's such an extraordinary moment."
