Lewandowski's Bayern hunger cannot be satisfied

Eight days, three games, ten goals; Bayern München's Robert Lewandowski has had quite the fairy tale week as far as goalscoring is concerned.

Last Tuesday, the Poland international broke several records in Germany after coming on at half-time against UEFA Champions League participants VfL Wolfsburg. His five goals in nine minutes included the quickest hat-trick in league history, as he also became the first player to score five in a league game in 24 years.

A week on and Lewandowski has bagged a further five goals, including a hat-trick during Tuesday night's UEFA Champions League victory over Dinamo Zagreb. "I can be happy that I scored more goals again today," Lewandowski told UEFA.com. "It's more important, however, that we won."

The 27-year-old has proven over the years that he is capable of producing individual moments of brilliance – perhaps most famously in the 2013 Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid – but his greatest asset to Bayern is arguably his ability to be in the right place at the right time.

With the injection of more pace and youth into the team, in the form of summer signings Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa, alongside the likes of Thiago Alcántatara, Mario Götze and Thomas Müller, Bayern are undoubtedly profiting from a more direct style of play that creates more chances in the penalty area for Lewandowski.

Douglas kick-started Bayern's rout on Tuesday night by waltzing into the box from the left and releasing a powerful low shot past Eduardo at the near post. Just a few minutes later, Thiago set off on a blistering counterattack before squaring it to Lewandowski for a simple finish into an open net.

Götze and Coman linked up neatly in the box for Bayern's third, which was quickly followed by another Lewandowski goal, as the Pole met Douglas's corner with a first-time, half-volleyed finish inside the box. Early in the second half, Douglas and Thiago combined majestically to set up Lewandowski's third, allowing the striker to scoop the ball over Eduardo into the net.

Despite his three goals, Lewandowski wasn't fully satisfied with his final tally on the night. "In the last 15 minutes, I had chances to score even more," he noted. "It doesn't matter how many I score – I always want to get more goals. We have our next game on Sunday, so for now we need to stay focused."

The encounter against former club Borussia Dortmund on Sunday – likely Bayern's closest domestic challengers this season – as well as Bayern's next Champions League fixture away at Arsenal, will provide Lewandowski with a much sterner tests than Dinamo did, but it is a challenge both he and Bayern will relish, as they look to consolidate their position at the top of the league and in Group F.
