Lionel Messi's stunning chip against Bayern München in last season's UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg – UEFA.com's Goal of the Season – was the United Kingdom's most-tweeted-about sporting moment in 2015, fans responding with 25,300 tweets per minute at one point.
The goal – Messi's second in a 3-0 win against Bayern which marked his 100th European appearance – was one of nine footballing moments in the top ten, and one of three UEFA Champions League highlights, along with Luis Suárez scoring against Manchester City, and Paris eliminating Chelsea with a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Perhaps most remarkably, Messi's goal was the only item in the list which did not feature a British club or British sportsman – a measure of the passion for the European game in its spiritual home, where #UCL was also one of the five most-used sporting hashtags this year.
