WATCH THE HIGHLIGHTS

Group E

Highlights: Bayern 5-1 Benfica

AEK Athens 0-2 Ajax
Dušan Tadić struck twice in five minutes to give Ajax the win needed to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2005/06 and confirm AEK in fourth place. The 68th-minute opener came via a penalty after a handball by Marko Livaja, for which he was sent off. Tadić's second followed good work from David Neves and substitute Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

Bayern München 5-1 Benfica
Ajax's early win meant Benfica required victory by two goals or more to have any chance of preserving their last-16 hopes – but Bayern confirmed their progress in comfortable fashion. Arjen Robben claimed two trademark curling goals before Robert Lewandowski headed his 50th in the UEFA Champions League. Teenage Benfica sub Gedson Fernandes pulled one back within a minute of his half-time introduction but Lewandowski made it 4-1 with another header and Franck Ribéry added the fifth, his first goal at this level since March 2015. Benfica will finish third and transfer to the UEFA Europa League.

Group F

Highlights: Lyon 2-2 Man. City

Lyon 2-2 Manchester City
City knew a point would clinch a round of 16 berth, yet Lyon's hopes of early progress were dashed by Shakhtar's late winner at Hoffenheim. Here, OL struck first early in the second half through Maxwel Cornet but seven minutes later Aymeric Laporte nodded City level. Although Cornet then restored Lyon's lead with nine minutes left, Sergio Agüero quickly made it 2-2, heading in Riyad Mahrez's corner.

Hoffenheim 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk
Hoffenheim wiped out Shakhtar's early 2-0 lead before half-time, only for Taison's added-time winner to keep the visitors within two points of Lyon while ending the hopes of the competition debutants. Ismaily and Taison scored within seconds of each other just before the quarter-hour, but Andrej Kramarić replied almost instantly and Steven Zuber levelled at 2-2. Hoffenheim's Ádám Szalai was sent off on the hour and Taison hit a post eight minutes from time before winning it in stoppage time. Shakhtar will go through if they beat Lyon on 12 December; to come third, Hoffenheim must win at City and hope OL lose.

Group G

Highlights: Roma 0-2 Real Madrid

CSKA Moskva 1-2 Viktoria Plzeň
CSKA's round of 16 bid is over following a defeat that moved Plzeň into third place, ahead of their hosts on head-to-head record. Nikola Vlašić's penalty gave CSKA a tenth-minute lead and their advantage looked further secure when Roman Procházka was denied just before half-time by Igor Akinfeev's first spot-kick save, at the 11th attempt, in 121 UEFA club competition appearances. However, Procházka did equalise after the break and Lukáš Hejda headed the winner with nine minutes left.

Roma 0-2 Real Madrid
CSKA's loss in the early game meant both teams were through before kick-off and the holders clinched top spot in the group with victory. Gareth Bale and Lucas Vázquez scored early in the second half on a night when Madrid got past the group stage for a record 23rd time in as many attempts, the 22nd season in succession.

Group H

Highlights: Man. United 1-0 Young Boys

Juventus 1-0 Valencia
A Mario Mandžukić strike crafted by Cristiano Ronaldo just before the hour was enough for a victory that took Juve through, although United's late winner means they are not guaranteed first place. Valencia, whose round of 16 chances were terminated by the goal at Old Trafford, will finish third and transfer to the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

Manchester United 1-0 Young Boys
It looked like United would be frustrated and need a result at Valencia on matchday six, but as at Juventus last time out, the Red Devils won it at the death, Marouane Fellaini finishing after sub Paul Pogba had flicked on a Luke Shaw long ball. To come top, United must win at Valencia next time and hope Juve do not beat Young Boys, who are confirmed in fourth.
