Xabi Alonso has signed a new two-year Real Madrid CF contract, keeping him at the club until summer 2016.

The 32-year-old Spain midfielder's current deal was due to expire in the summer but his future at the Santiago Bernabéu is now secure. Former Real Sociedad de Fútbol captain Alonso joined Madrid in 2009 from Liverpool FC and has made more than 200 appearances for the club, winning the 2010/11 Copa del Rey and 2011/12 Liga, while also helping Spain to victory at UEFA EURO 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2012, during which he passed 100 caps.

A 2005 UEFA Champions League winner with Liverpool, Alonso will aim to emulate that feat with Madrid this season as they prepare to face FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16 on 26 February and 18 March.
