Bayer 04 Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of midfielder Emre Can from FC Bayern München on a four-year contract.

According to a statement on the Bayern website, the European champions have "retained the option of bringing Emre Can back to Munich at some point in the future. All other details of the agreement remain undisclosed."

The 19-year-old – who featured once for Germany at this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Israel – joined Bayern's academy in 2009 and made his first Bundesliga outings in April, scoring in a 1-0 win against SC Freiburg. Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler said: "He is a versatile player with huge potential and we're sure he's going to show that here in Leverkusen."

Can added: "Bayer 04 Leverkusen are one of the top teams in the Bundesliga and they are playing in the [UEFA] Champions League. I want to contribute so we can be successful in every competition during the coming years."
