UEFA.com looks at the key statistics from this week's games, including yet another Lionel Messi landmark and a record-equalling hat-trick total in the group stage.

• The first of Lionel Messi's three goals for FC Barcelona against APOEL FC enabled him to become the UEFA Champions League's all-time top scorer, eclipsing the record of 71 goals he shared with Raúl González. The Argentinian international now has 74, three more than Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Raúl in second place by scoring the winner for Real Madrid CF against FC Basel 1893 the following evening.

• Messi's hat-trick was his fifth in the UEFA Champions League – another record. Luiz Adriano, Mario Gomez and Filippo Inzaghi have three each.

• With Iker Casillas not playing for Madrid against Basel, Barça's Xavi Hernández moved to the top of the UEFA Champions League's all-time appearance listings as he came off the bench for his 145th game in the competition.

• Madrid's triumph in Switzerland was their eighth UEFA Champions League victory in succession, leaving them just two short of the competition record, set by FC Bayern München between April and November 2013.

• Successes for Madrid, Barcelona, Club Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club on matchday five mean that Spanish clubs have now won over half of their UEFA Champions League matches, with 348 victories from 692 games.

• Following defeats in England for Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, Madrid are the only team to have won all five of their group games this season. Should they defeat PFC Ludogorets Razgrad at home on matchday six, they will become only the sixth side to claim maximum points in a group – and the first club to achieve the feat twice having also won six out of six in 2011/12.

• In losing 3-0 at home to FC Porto, FC BATE Borisov's goals against tally in this term's competition rose to 22, which equals the most ever conceded in a group stage – level with GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and FC Nordsjælland (2012/13).

• Porto are this season's highest scorers with 15 goals, but they will have to add another five on matchday six, at home to FC Shakhtar Donetsk, to equal the competition record shared by Manchester United FC (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12) and Madrid (2013/14).

• John Terry's opening goal for Chelsea FC at FC Schalke 04 was his tenth in the UEFA Champions League. The most scored in the competition by a defender is 16, by former Brazil left-back Roberto Carlos. The only other goalscoring defenders in double figures are Iván Helguera (15) and Christian Panucci (11).

• Other players who moved into double figures on matchday five were Porto's Jackson Martínez, now on ten goals, and Atlético's Mario Mandžukić, whose hat-trick in the 4-0 win against Olympiacos FC – the first in the competition by an Atlético player – lifted him on to 11.

• Mandžukić's hat-trick was the seventh in this season's group stage, equalling the competition record set in 2013/14. It is only the second time there have been three hat-tricks on a matchday, following three-goal hauls for Andriy Shevchenko, Adriano and Levan Kobiashvili on 23 November 2005.

• Tuesday's hat-tricks for Argentina strikers Messi and Sergio Agüero meant players from the same country scored three goals in the UEFA Champions League on the same day for the first time.

• Francesco Totti's goal for AS Roma at PFC CSKA Moskva strengthened his position as the UEFA Champions League's oldest scorer – at the age of 38 years 59 days.

• Two players reached a half-century of UEFA Champions League appearances on matchday five – Arsenal FC's Mathieu Flamini and Madrid's Marcelo, both of whom came on as substitutes.
