Pepe, Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vázquez, Isco (Spain), Toni Kroos (Germany), Gareth Bale (Wales) and Luka Modrić (Croatia) are all fondling their UEFA Champions League winners medals with pride, but do they have more honours to come this summer?

Seven players have been on the winning side in the finals of the European Cup and the UEFA European Championship in the same summer, while eight more have had the pleasure of following up continental club success with a FIFA World Cup a few weeks later.

Players who have won a European Cup and a EURO in the same summer
1964: Luis Suárez (Internazionale and Spain)
1988: Hans van Breukelen, Ronald Koeman, Berry van Aerle, Gerald Vanenburg (PSV and Netherlands)
2012: Fernando Torres, Juan Mata (Chelsea and Spain)

1974: Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Uli Hoeness (Bayern and West Germany)
1998: Christian Karembeu (Real Madrid and France)
2002: Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid and Brazil)

A handful more had more bittersweet experiences. Wim Kieft won the 1988 European Cup with PSV Eindhoven but did not make it off the bench with the Netherlands in the final of the 1988 UEFA European Championship. Real Madrid's Nicolas Anelka had the same experience with France in 2000, while team-mate Christian Karembeu fared slightly worse – he was an unused squad member in the 2000 UEFA Champions league and UEFA EURO 2000 finals (though he had been on the field to win both the UEFA Champions League and the 1998 World Cup two summers previously).

Sami Khedira, meanwhile, won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid in 2014, but was injured in the warm-up as Germany won the 2014 World Cup final a few weeks later.
