German champions VfB Stuttgart have suffered an early blow in their preparations for the 2007/08 season after defender Serdar Tasci sustained knee ligament damage in training.
Key performer
The 20-year-old, who made 26 Bundesliga appearances during Stuttgart's title-winning campaign, has partially torn ligaments in his right knee and although he does not need surgery, Tasci's fitness for the start of the new term will be a question mark. The full-back made a strong contribution to Stuttgart's championship success after being handed his top-flight debut by coach Armin Veh last August. The club begin their title defence against FC Schalke 04 on 10 August.
