Werder Bremen have set about filling the void left by the departure of Miroslav Klose by bringing in former FC Porto striker Carlos Alberto from Fluminense FC.

Werder Bremen have set about filling the void left by the departure of Miroslav Klose to FC Bayern München by recruiting the highly-regarded Brazilian striker Carlos Alberto from Fluminense FC for a fee of €7.8m.

The 22-year-old finalised the move on Saturday having already passed a medical at the Weserstadion and agreed personal terms on Friday. "I was in Bremen for the first time this week and I liked it immediately. I don't think the integration will be difficult," said Carlos Alberto, who won the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto in 2004. "I have played together with Diego and Hugo Almeida and I know Naldo personally too. We are friends."

Gelsenkirchen goal
Much has been expected of Carlos Alberto ever since he moved from Fluminense to Porto midway through the 2003/04 season. He enjoyed initial success, featuring seven times as José Mourinho's team won the UEFA Champions League - indeed he set them on course for their 3-0 final victory against AS Monaco FC with the opening goal in Gelsenkirchen. Mourinho departed after that match, however, and Carlos Alberto fell out of favour, returning to Brazil and Corinthians FC before moving back to Fluminense on loan in 2006.
