Van Geel accepts Ajax challenge

AFC Ajax have appointed 44-year-old Martin van Geel as general manager following his success at AZ Alkmaar.

Alkmaar inspiration
The 44-year-old joins from AZ Alkmaar, where he performed the same function and was seen as having a crucial role as the team reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals and finished third in the Eredivisie in 2004/05. He played for Ajax between 1979 and 1981, helping the club to a Dutch league title in 1980, and also had spells with Roda JC, Feyenoord and Willem II during his playing career.

'Career highlight'
After hanging up his boots in 1995, he became general manager of Willem II and - together with Co Adriaanse, with whom he would later link up at Alkmaar - guided the club to Champions League qualification in 1999/00. "I have had a wonderful time with Alkmaar, but it is a huge challenge at Ajax," said Van Geel, who replaces Louis van Gaal after he stepped down from the post in October 2004. "I have played here, and coming back in this role is something I see as the highlight of my career."
