Chelsea regret misses, Schalke celebrate spirit

While José Mourinho thought Chelsea FC let a golden opportunity slip against FC Schalke 04, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar said the German side had "fought and run and took our chance".

José Mourinho, Chelsea manager
We had more than a couple of fantastic chances to win the game but we got a point. It is not the best result but it is a result. In the second half they scored, we had a good reaction and I have nothing to complain about with my players.

We had very good chances to make it 2-0 and did not, and at 1-1 we had a fantastic reaction and chances to win the game. But that's football. That's Champions League. That's normal. They came to get the point. They found themselves with 1-1 and a chance to keep the result. They had a good goalkeeper and players making fantastic defensive clearances. So congratulations to them. They got their objective.

In the last 15 minutes, [Loïc] Rémy, [John] Terry, [Eden] Hazard could all have scored. We had so many great situations, but that's football. Defending like they did is also football. In a short competition of six matches, one point is one you get and two you don't.

Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea goalkeeper
At home you always have to try to win your games and today we could have won. We had other opportunities to score and also when we were still leading 1-0 we had chances to make it two.

We knew they were really strong on the counterattack so in the first half they were really dangerous without having the big opportunities but in the second half they scored a goal after we lost the ball. But OK, we have to continue working because we play Manchester City on Sunday.

We have won four games in the league and the draw today was not what we expected. We expected to win, but we have to continue to work hard; the season is very long.

[Schalke] are a good team. In the German league they drew against Bayern so you know they are a strong team. From their organisation they have really good players for the counterattack, quality players like Draxler and Huntelaar. They are a good squad and we knew it would be hard.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Schalke striker
You just go into the match, and we told ourselves that we wanted to give all we had. But we know about our delicate situation with all the injured players, and so many players had to play in positions they are not used to, like Marco [Höger] or Roman [Neustädter]. We knew that if we stayed in the match anything could happen, and we saw that if you fight and don't give up you can achieve a draw here.

I think the whole team was relieved [when he scored]. But we knew that while we were 1-0 down we were still in the game, as we saw in our [recent] match against Bayern. There is always a chance to score the equaliser with a set piece.

We did a great job, especially in the second half – we were a bit insecure in the first half, and conceded a stupid goal. It was similar to last season. We need to stop that, because if not we give away easy goals. But we managed to make up for that well. We fought and ran a lot. When we got the chance to score, we took it.

Julian Draxler, Schalke midfielder
The result is certainly better [than 12 months ago, when Schalke lost 3-0] and our approach was much better. We had a difficult start to the game but we are getting better and better and 1-1 at Chelsea is a very good result. Many players did not play today so it was not easy, but the players who were on the pitch did a good job so we are very happy with the result.
