French go wild about 'crazy night'

AS Monaco FC and Olympique Lyonnais got top marks from the French press after Matchday 4.

Matchday 4 honours
It is to the latter two clubs that the Matchday 4 honours belong. Monaco registered an 8-3 win against RC Deportivo La Coruña - a record for this competition - while Lyon defeated FC Bayern München 2-1 at the Olympiastadion. The only question for the French press was which to applaud first on what it termed "une soirée de folie" - a crazy night. Here uefa.com rounds up the reaction across Europe to this week's action.

Belgium
Club Brugge KV: For 85 minutes, Club Brugge seemed to be on their way to at least four points from a maximum six against holders Milan. The Flemish outfit were as solid as they had been a fortnight ago, and increased the pressure on the Italians. (Het Nieuwsblad)
RSC Anderlecht: The Purples suffered the fury of Parkhead. It resulted in the concession of three goals within the first half-hour of this meeting. (Le Soir)

Czech Republic
AC Sparta Praha: Besiktas were hungry for a victory, while Sparta wanted only a draw from the start. They did not achieve it in the end. (MfDnes)

England
Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger's men burst into life with a sweet headed goal from Ashley Cole that launched them back into contention. (Daily Telegraph)
Chelsea FC: Three goals in ten minutes in the second half crowned a display of such confidence that few would now bet against Claudio Ranieri's team at least reaching the semi-finals. (The Times)
Manchester United FC: Running Rangers ragged with some exhilarating play, Manchester United raced to within touching distance of the Champions League knockout stage. (Daily Telegraph)

France
AS Monaco FC: Monaco undid Deportivo La Coruña with the biggest score in Champions League history. They also equalled the Champions Cup record held by Lokomotiv Sofia who won 8-3 against Malmö in 1964/65. (Le Monde)
Olympique Lyonnais: We wanted to know if Lyon have guts. Now we know. The Lyon players were more inspired than the German champions. (L'Equipe)
Olympique Marseille: Olympique de Marseille reached the end of their Champions League journey and are still far from the UEFA Cup. (L'Equipe)

Germany
FC Bayern München: Munich wanted to shoot themselves out of their crisis, now they are even deeper in it after their sensational 2-1 loss against Olympique Lyonnais. (Bild)
VfB Stuttgart: The high-altitude flight of Stuttgart in the Champions League showed no signs of letting up, and now one point against Rangers is enough. (Stuttgarter Nachrichten)

Greece
AEK Athens FC: AEK were scared and lost their UEFA Cup chances. (Apogevmatini)
Olympiacos CFP: Olympiacos saved the reputation of Greek football by giving the country its first win in this season's Champions League. (Eleftherotypia)
Panathinaikos FC: Panathinaikos went through hell to score their goal but then managed to throw everything away in the space of ten minutes. (Filathlos)

Italy
AC Milan: Despite being down to ten men for almost an hour, the Rossoneri won with a fantastic goal by the young Brazilian Kaka in the final minutes of the game. (Gazzetta dello Sport)
Internazionale FC: After this draw the Nerazzurri will have to fight until the end to qualify. The match against Arsenal will be the decider. (Corriere dello Sport)
Juventus FC: Despite playing without several key players, Juve easily secured a 0-0 draw to qualify for the second stage. (Gazzetta dello Sport)
S.S. Lazio: Mancini's side had the wrong approach to the game and were too nervous. Chelsea played much better in the first part of the game and scored goals in the second when Lazio were tired. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Netherlands
AFC Ajax: Against the team ranked 16th in the Spanish league, Koeman's team showed their shortcomings. (De Volkskrant)
PSV Eindhoven: PSV have almost certainly managed to reach their goal with their second victory over AEK Athens. One point will do for PSV to stay in Europe. (Algemeen Dagblad)

Scotland
Celtic FC: Celtic took revenge on Anderlecht with a mighty first-half performance. The style, skill and pace of Martin O'Neill's side left Anderlecht stunned. (Daily Record)
Rangers FC: The most depressing aspect of Tuesday's match would be the realisation that the comprehensiveness of the English team's victory owed as much to the visitors' shortcomings as it did to any powerful resurgence by the winners. (The Scotsman)

Serbia and Montenegro
FK Partizan: Why was God not, just a little bit, on the side of a fantastic Partizan? Only a goal was missing for the happiness of the entire nation. (Vecernje novosti)

Spain
RC Celta de Vigo: Milosevic won a penalty, scored the second and marked the difference between the sides. First triumph for the Galicians in the Champions League. (AS)
