With Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League in the books, UEFA.com takes a look at some of the top ball-winners.
Nineteen players completed a total of ten or more ball recoveries on Matchday 4, with the top-scoring player being Atalanta’s Marten de Roon, who successively registered 16 ball recoveries in his side’s 0-2 triumph away to 2018/19 UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool. As a result, De Roon boosted his #UCLfantasy tally on Matchday 4 to seven points. The midfielder is currently priced at €6.0m and with just a 1% ownership, could prove a shrewd differential selection should he continue in the same manner on Matchday 5.
Just behind De Roon with 15 recorded ball recoveries on Matchday 4 was Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konaté. Despite being on the losing side in a 1-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, Konaté also picked up seven #UCLfantasy points, an impressive individual score for any defender who doesn't keep a clean sheet.
Completing the top three was a familiar name in Salzburg’s Maximilian Wöber. The Austrian centre-back accrued 14 ball recoveries in his side's 3-1 defeat away at holders Bayern. This takes Wöber to second in the overall ball recovery table, having racked up 42 completed ball recoveries since Matchday 1.
Only Cristian Romero of Atalanta has more over the course of the group stage so far after the Argentinian added another 11 ball recoveries to his overall total against Liverpool. From a #UCLfantasy perspective, this means Romero has collected 13 more Fantasy points via the recovery route.
#UCLfantasy managers have plenty of Matchday 5 options in terms of players who can provide them with a healthy ball recovery points return. Atalanta play host to Midtjylland and interest is sure to be high in both De Roon and particularly Romero. Salzburg travel to Lokomotiv Moskva for those eyeing up Wöber, whilst Konaté and Leipzig are at İstanbul Başakşehir.
Another side to keep a close eye on from a ball recovery perspective is Juventus. Both Matthijs de Ligt and Alex Sandro recorded ten completed ball recoveries on Matchday 4 as Juventus left it late to beat Ferencváros 2-1 in Italy. Priced at €5.0m and €5.5m respectively, both played could prove smart acquisitions for the home game with Dynamo Kyiv.
