After a last-gasp defeat at Atlético de Madrid, Porto are looking to get their first Group B points on the board as they welcome a Club Brugge side who opened their latest UEFA Champions League campaign with a victory.
Porto went down 2-1 in Spain on Matchday 1, all three goals coming after the 90th minute with the winner arriving 11 minutes into added time. Meanwhile an Abakar Sylla strike proved enough for Club Brugge to see off Bayer Leverkusen in Belgium and claim a rare group stage victory, ending a four-match losing streak in the competition in the process.
Previous meetings
The teams were paired together in the 2016/17 group stage, André Silva scoring the decisive goal for Porto in both games. His 93rd-minute penalty secured a comeback win in Belgium on Matchday 3, Jelle Vossen having given Club Brugge a 12th-minute lead that was cancelled out by Miguel Layún in the 68th minute. Silva then got the only goal at the Estádio do Dragão two weeks later.
Those six points helped Porto finish second in Group G behind Leicester on 11 points; Club Brugge were bottom having lost all six games.
Porto prevailed 5-3 on aggregate when the clubs met in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup second round, winning the first leg 3-0 at the Estádio das Antas thanks to goals by Abel Miglieti (6, 49) and Flávio Fonseca (48). Although Club Brugge managed three goals in the return – through Ruud Geels (3), John Thio (45) and Nico Rijnders (65) – Flávio (34) and Miglieti (88) scored again for the visitors.
Form guide
Porto
Porto are making their 26th appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage, level with Bayern München and one short of Barcelona and Real Madrid’s competition record. They have featured in the competition proper in 11 of the last 12 campaigns.
In 2021/22, Sérgio Conceição's side finished third in their section behind Liverpool and Atlético, winning only one of their six games. It was the first time Porto had failed to progress from their UEFA Champions League group since 2015/16.
The Dragons therefore moved into the UEFA Europa League, beating Lazio in the knockout play-offs (2-1 h, 2-2 a) but losing to Lyon in the round of 16 (0-1 h, 1-1 a).
Porto have reached the round of 16 or better on six of their last nine UEFA Champions League group stage appearances.
Conceição's team claimed the Portuguese Liga and cup in 2021/22 – Porto’s ninth domestic double and second in three seasons.
Last season's Matchday 6 loss to Atlético (1-3) was only Porto's second in their last 11 home games in the UEFA Champions League group stage, with eight victories in that sequence, although they have lost nine of their last 19 matches in the competition (W7 D3).
Porto have never lost at home against Belgian opposition (W6 D2), winning the last two. All six of their defeats by Belgian clubs have come away from home.
Club Brugge
This is Club Brugge's tenth UEFA Champions League group stage campaign – two short of Anderlecht's Belgian record – and a club-record fifth in succession.
All nine of those previous campaigns have failed to extend into the knockout rounds; in 2021/22 the Bruges side finished bottom of Group A behind Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig after collecting four points from their six games, the last four all defeats.
Before that four-match losing run, Club Brugge had recorded three victories in eight group games – as many as in their previous 22 matches in the competition.
The Matchday 1 defeat of Leverkusen this season is one of only five Blauw-Zwart have managed in their last 33 fixtures in the UEFA Champions League proper (D10 L18).
Champions of Belgium for the 18th time in 2021/22 – their third title in a row – Club Brugge appointed Carl Hoefkens as coach in May, their former defender earning internal promotion to replace the Ajax-bound Alfred Schreuder, who had in turn taken over from Philippe Clement four months earlier.
Club Brugge have lost only four of their last 11 away matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage (W3 D4), scoring twice in three of the last six.
Club Brugge's record from five previous visits to Portugal reads W1 L4. That solitary success came at Braga in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage, Ryan Donk securing a 2-1 win with a 91st-minute goal.
Home and away, Club Brugge's record against Portuguese clubs is W4 D1 L5.
