Who should be my Champions League Fantasy Football captain for Matchday 2?

The dust has barely settled on the first round of games but with Matchday 2 just around the corner, UEFA.com selects four strong options for managers to ponder over for their captaincy plans on #UCLfantasy, presented by Playstation.

Highlights: Inter 0-2 Bayern

TUESDAY 13 SEPTEMBER

Leroy Sané (€9.0m) vs Barcelona (H)

Given that he scored the most Fantasy points among midfielders last season, it should come as little surprise that Sané started with a bang on Matchday 1. However, #UCLfantasy managers were tentative when it came to selecting the Bayern winger for their opening squads as he has not always been a guaranteed starter in the early stages of the season. As a result, the German international's ownership was fairly modest going into Matchday 1 but that could be set to change after his 13-point return against Inter, where he had a hand in both goals and took home the Player of the Match award. Having performed strongly against one European giant, Sané will be relishing the prospect of facing Barcelona on Matchday 2, and is worthy of captaincy consideration.

Robert Lewandowski (€11.0m) vs Bayern (A)

Not to be outdone by young starlets Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who both scored twice on Tuesday, the ever-dependable Lewandowski went one better on Wednesday with a hat-trick for new employers Barcelona. That places the Pole third on the list of all-time goalscorers in the competition, and top of the list of #UCLfantasy point-scoring forwards with 18. Next up for the 34-year-old is a quick return to Munich, where he spent eight goal-laden seasons before his summer move to Spain. With an ownership that will be pushing 50% by the time Matchday 2 comes around, it is likely that captaining Lewandowski will be the only way #UCLfantasy managers can propel themselves up the rankings if he scores heavily again.

Highlights: Sevilla 0-4 Man. City

WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER

Erling Haaland (€11.0m) vs Dortmund (H)

No matter which club Haaland lines up for in the UEFA Champions League, the result is the same, with the Norwegian goal machine already tormenting defenders for Manchester City, just as he did for Salzburg and Dortmund. The latter are City's next opponents in what could be one of the ties of Matchday 2, and Haaland – just as he has been in the early part of his City career – will be focal point of the Premier League side's attacks. The 22-year-old became the fastest and youngest player to score 25 UEFA Champions League goals on Matchday 1, and with 12 in his first eight games in all competitions for City, he looks to be a superb captaincy choice.

Kylian Mbappé (€11.0m) vs Maccabi Haifa (A)

Mbappé is likely to be Haaland's main long-term rival for the title of world's top striker, and their 2022/23 contest got off to a fine start with the Frenchman matching Haaland's two goals, but bettering him in terms of #UCLfantasy total as the Player of the Match award against Juventus took him to 13 points. Playing alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, Mbappé enjoys plenty of service and showed that to good effect on Matchday 1. Maccabi Haifa were beaten 2-0 by Benfica last time out and could be in for a long evening on Matchday 2 if Mbappé replicates his devastating opening display.
