As the final matchday of the group stage approaches, UEFA.com selects some key captaincy options for managers to ponder on #UCLfantasy, presented by Playstation.
TUESDAY 1 NOVEMBER
Diogo Costa (€5.1m) vs Atlético (H)
This is the first, and possibly the last, time a goalkeeper has made it into UEFA.com's captaincy selections, but Costa's incredible Fantasy output of late cannot be ignored. Three consecutive UEFA Champions League clean sheets is already a good return, but add an assist and three penalty saves and the Porto No1 has collected a remarkable total of 45 Fantasy points. Scores of 16, 15 and 12 over the last three matchdays are captain-worthy hauls, and while it is unusual for a goalkeeper to be able to repeat such feats, the Matchday 6 contest against already-eliminated Atlético may tempt some #UCLfantasy managers into a differential captain.
Harry Kane (€10.5m) vs Marseille (A)
Kane represents a far more traditional armband option for those looking to get their matchday off to a flier. Group D has been the most fiercely contested this season, and with just two points separating first and last, all four teams are in with a chance of reaching the knockout stage. Those who are considering Kane as a captain can therefore be confident of his involvement in Tottenham's decisive Matchday 6 game at Marseille. The England international has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season so, if one man is likely to step up for the Premier League side come crunch time, it will be their prolific frontman.
WEDNESDAY 2 NOVEMBER
Karim Benzema (€10.8m) vs Celtic (H)
The Matchday 5 loss at Leipzig was Real Madrid's first in any competition this season and means they are not yet guaranteed to finish top of Group F. As a result, Carlo Ancelotti is likely to select a strong line-up for the visit of Celtic on Matchday 6, which could mean a return for Benzema. The recently-crowned Ballon d'Or winner missed the Leipzig defeat with a minor complaint but it is not thought to be serious, and though the Frenchman is yet to score in the UEFA Champions League this season, 86 career goals in the competition have long since proved his pedigree at this level.
Kylian Mbappé (€11.2m) vs Juventus (A)
Real Madrid, Paris also go into Matchday 6 sure of progress but with first place still to be decided, and the final Group H standings could very well come down to goal difference. Mbappé is the joint-top scorer in the UEFA Champions League this season with six goals, and two assists, and earned 16 Fantasy points – his highest tally of the season – in the Matchday 5 win against Maccabi Haifa. The reverse fixture against Matchday 6 opponents Juventus brought two goals and the Player of the Match award for Mbappé, who is the joint top-scoring player on #UCLfantasy this season with 49 points.
