Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United are level on points in Group F as they meet again in Germany with the home side looking to build on their first win in this season's UEFA Champions League.
A 45th-minute Felix Nmecha goal proved enough to give Dortmund three points at St James' Park on 25 October, ending the German side's six-game losing run in England and inflicting Newcastle's first defeat by Bundesliga opponents.
That was the sides' first meeting, and only Newcastle's sixth game against a German club in UEFA competition. Dortmund, by contrast, have faced English opponents 33 times.
The teams are now level on four points, two behind Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Dortmund 2-0 in France on Matchday 1. The German club drew 0-0 at home against AC Milan in their previous home game; Newcastle had also shared a scoreless draw against the Rossoneri, in Italy on Matchday 1 in their first Champions League fixture since 2002/03, before brushing aside Paris 4-1.
Form guide
Dortmund
Record vs English clubs: W13 D6 L15 F37 A42
Home record vs English clubs: W7 D5 L4
Dortmund played four games against English opponents in the 2022/23 Champions League, losing 2-1 at Manchester City on Matchday 2 before a 0-0 home draw on Matchday 5. They then beat Chelsea 1-0 in Germany in the round of 16 first leg, but bowed out after a 2-0 second-leg loss in London.
The goalless draw against City ended the German club's eight-game losing streak against English clubs. The Matchday 3 win at Newcastle was only Dortmund second victory against Premier League opposition since a 2-1 victory at Tottenham in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League round of 16 second leg, the other against Chelsea last season; their record since the win at Spurs is otherwise D2 L9.
Dortmund had lost three games in a row at home to English clubs before drawing with City last season. The defeat of Chelsea was their first against Premier League visitors since a 3-0 defeat of Spurs in the 2015/16 Europa League round of 16 first leg.
Last season's Bundesliga runners-up are in the Champions League group stage for the 18th time over and the eighth successive season. All but two of their ten most recent campaigns have extended into the knockout rounds.
In 2022/23, Edin Terzić's team were second in Group G behind eventual champions Manchester City before being knocked out by Chelsea.
That was the third time BVB had been eliminated in the last 16 in their last five Champions League campaigns.
Dortmund have only lost one of their last 16 home games in the Champions League group stage (W9 D6).
However, the win against Chelsea in last season's round of 16 first leg is one of only four in Dortmund's last 12 home European games (D5 L3).
European champions in 1997 and runners-up to Bayern in the 2013 final at Wembley, Dortmund missed the chance to deny Bayern an 11th successive Bundesliga title in 2022/23, drawing 2-2 at home to Mainz on the final day to allow the Munich club to overtake them at the top of the table.
Newcastle
Record vs German clubs: W4 D1 L1 F12 A6
Away record vs German clubs: W2 D1 L0
Newcastle's last game against German opponents before Matchday 3 was the first they had failed to win – a goalless draw at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup group stage.
The Magpies had scored three goals in each of their first four meetings against Bundesliga teams, winning three successive games 3-1 before that draw in Frankfurt. That included the previous away match – Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002/03 Champions League second group stage in which Alan Shearer scored a hat-trick. Newcastle also won 3-2 at 1860 München in the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final first leg (6-3 aggregate).
This is Newcastle's third Champions League group stage campaign and a first since 2002/03, when they finished second in the initial group stage but were eliminated after coming third in their section behind Barcelona and Inter in the second group stage.
The English club's only other group campaign came in 1997/98 when, despite opening with a 3-2 home win against Barcelona in which Faustino Asprilla scored a hat-trick, they were knocked out having finished third in Group C behind Dynamo Kyiv and PSV Eindhoven.
Newcastle's last European campaign came in 2012/13 when, under Alan Pardew, they reached the Europa League quarter-finals, losing to eventual runners-up Benfica (1-3 a, 1-1 h).
A 1-0 victory at Metalist Kharkiv in the 2012/13 Europa League round of 32 second leg is Newcastle's only win in their last nine European away games (D5 L3).
Home and away, the English side have lost only three of their last 17 European games (W6 D8).
Newcastle have also lost only three of their last 21 UEFA club competition group stage matches (W11 D7).
Eddie Howe's side were fourth in the Premier League in 2022/23, the club's highest league finish since coming third under Sir Bobby Robson in 2002/03.
