Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid are both in need of an improvement in results as they meet at the Parc des Princes on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League.

The French champions kicked off with a 1-0 home win against Girona but then lost 2-0 at Arsenal before being held 1-1 by PSV Eindhoven in Paris. Atleti also began with a home victory, 2-1 against Leipzig, but then went down 4-0 at Benfica and 1-3 at home to LOSC Lille.

This is the sides' first meeting.

Form guide

Paris Saint-Germain

Record vs Spanish clubs: W18 D9 L14 F68 A62
Home record vs Spanish clubs: W11 D6 L4

A 90th-minute own goal at home to Girona on Matchday 1 made it four wins in Paris's last five games with Liga opponents.

Paris faced Spanish opponents in both the round of 16 and the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League, beating Real Sociedad 2-0 at home and 2-1 away before overturning a 2-3 home first-leg defeat against Barcelona by coming from behind to progress with a 4-1 victory in Spain.

Despite wins in five of their last seven matches, Paris have managed only eight victories in their last 20 against Spanish clubs, home and away (D3 L9). They have lost three of their last ten games against Liga clubs at the Parc des Princes (W5 D2).

This is Paris's 17th campaign in the Champions League proper, setting a new French record; they had previously been level with Lyon. They have featured every season since 2012/13, reaching the knockout stages in all 12 of those campaigns.

Runners-up to Bayern München in the 2020 final, Les Parisiens were second in their section behind Borussia Dortmund last season. After eliminating Real Sociedad and Barcelona they came up short against Dortmund again in the last four (0-1 a, 0-1 h).

The French side have lost in the last 16 in five of their last eight campaigns.

The Parisians have won 15 of their last 36 European matches (D8 L13).

The second-leg defeat by Dortmund in last season's semi-finals is one of only nine losses in Paris's last 77 European home games (W48 D20), although seven have come in their last 27 matches at the Parc des Princes.

Paris claimed their 12th French title, and tenth in the last 12 seasons, in 2023/24 and lifted the Coupe de France for the 15th time to complete a fifth domestic double.

Atlético de Madrid

Record vs French clubs: W9 D5 L2 F30 A19
Away record vs French clubs: W3 D4 L1

The Matchday 3 defeat against Lille ended Atlético's four-match winning run against French side and a seven-match unbeaten run (W5 D2) since a 4-2 loss at Lens in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup fourth round second leg that completed a 6-4 aggregate defeat. That is their only other loss against French opponents.

Atleti's last away game against a Ligue 1 side was a 2-1 win at Monaco in the 2018/19 group stage, making it successive victories in France and four games unbeaten (W2 D2).

Atleti are making their 15th appearance in the Champions League proper and a 12th in succession. They have featured every season since 2013/14.

Runners-up in 2014 and 2016, both against Real Madrid, Diego Simeone's side finished top of their section in 2023/24 and then ousted Inter Milan on penalties in the round of 16 (0-1 a, 2-1 h aet, 3-2 pens) before losing to Dortmund in the last eight (2-1 h, 2-4 a).

A 3-1 win at Feyenoord on Matchday 5 last season is Atlético's only victory in ten Champions League away games – a run that includes seven defeats.

Atleti have progressed to the knockout rounds in nine of their last 11 campaigns.

The Colchoneros were fourth in La Liga in 2023/24. It was their lowest league finish since 2011/12, when they were fifth.
