Already through to the UEFA Champions League knockout phase, Liverpool will seek to continue their perfect record in this season's competition away to Girona, who are attempting to add to their solitary victory.

The six-time European champions made it five wins out of five with a 2-0 defeat of holders Real Madrid on Matchday 5, confirming their place in the round of 16 or the knockout phase play-offs.

Girona went down 1-0 at Sturm Graz last time out and have only three points, from a 2-0 win at home to Slovan Bratislava on Matchday 3.

This is the teams' first meeting, and Girona's first game against an English club.

Form guide

Girona

Girona are the 14th Spanish side to feature in the Champions League proper – one short of Germany's competition record.

Indeed, this is the first time Girona have taken part in UEFA competition. Leipzig, in 2017, are the only previous club to have made their European debut in the Champions League proper, an honour Girona have shared with Brest this season.

Girona are one of five clubs to be making their Champions League debuts in 2024/25, along with Aston Villa, Bologna, Brest and Slovan.

Míchel guided Girona to third place in last season's La Liga table on 81 points, 14 behind champions Real Madrid and only four adrift of runners-up Barcelona.

That was also Los Blanquivermells' highest league placing in what was only their fourth season in the Spanish top flight; they finished tenth in both 2017/18 and 2022/23 and 18th in 2018/19, when they were relegated.

At home in this season's Champions League, Girona have lost 2-3 to Feyenoord before beating Slovan.

Liverpool

Record vs Spanish clubs: W20 D13 L19 F68 A62
Away record vs Spanish clubs: W9 D5 L9

Liverpool's last four games against Spanish opponents have all come against Real Madrid, Matchday 5 ending a run of three successive defeats.

The Reds' most recent game in Spain was a 1-0 loss at Madrid in the 2022/23 round of 16 second leg (2-6 aggregate).

Liverpool now have seven victories in their last 22 fixtures against Spanish clubs (D3 L12) – a sequence that includes a 3-1 loss to Sevilla in the 2016 UEFA Europa League final and defeats by Real Madrid in the Champions League finals of 2018 (1-3) and 2022 (0-1).

The Merseysiders have lost seven of their last ten games away to Spanish teams (W2 D1) – although they won the two preceding their 2023 defeat at Real Madrid.

This is Liverpool's 16th Champions League campaign; they have reached the final five times, lifting the trophy in 2005 and 2019.

The Merseyside club last featured in 2022/23, finishing second in their section behind Napoli before elimination by Real Madrid in the round of 16.

Liverpool have won 15 of their last 20 away Champions League matches (D1 L4) including ten of the last 12; they have been victorious at AC Milan (3-1) and Leipzig (1-0) this season.

Jürgen Klopp's team took part in the Europa League in 2023/24, finishing first in their section before overwhelming Sparta Praha in the round of 16 (5-1 a, 6-1 h) but came up short against eventual winners Atalanta in the last eight (0-3 h, 1-0 a).

Liverpool were third in last season's Premier League. That was Klopp's last season in charge after nine years at Anfield; Arne Slot came in from Feyenoord to replace the German.
