Form guide

Juventus

Record vs English clubs: W21 D13 L17 F60 A56
Home record vs English clubs: W15 D6 L4

The Matchday 5 draw at Villa was Juve's first game against a Premier League club since a 4-0 loss at Chelsea in 2021/22 – their heaviest defeat by an English team.

Juventus were unbeaten in nine matches against English teams (W5 D4) before a 1-2 home defeat by Manchester United in the 2018/19 group stage but have now lost two of the last four.

The Bianconeri beat Chelsea 1-0 in their last game against English visitors in Turin; the defeat by United is their only reverse in their last ten home matches against Premier League clubs (W4 D5).

Juventus are making their 24th appearance in the Champions League proper – an Italian record, three more than AC Milan.

The Bianconeri have returned to the competition after missing out in 2023/24. The previous season was their 11th consecutive Champions League campaign, and the first time they missed out on the round of 16 since 2013/14 as Juve finished behind Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain in their section.

Juve have lost four of their last six home Champions League matches – including 0-1 at home to Stuttgart on Matchday 3 – having won ten of the previous 11, losing once.

The Turin team went on to win three UEFA Europa League ties in 2022/23 before losing 3-2 on aggregate to eventual champions Sevilla in the semi-finals.

Juventus did not feature in UEFA competition in 2023/24 for the first time since 2011/12.

Champions of Europe in 1985 and 1996, Juve have also lost seven European Cup finals including five in the Champions League era – more than any other club.

Having won a record nine successive Serie A titles between 2012 and 2020, Juve finished third in 2023/24 – their highest final placing since being crowned champions in 2019/20.

Allegri left Juventus in May – he had also coached the club between 2014 and 2019, leading them to the Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017 – to be replaced by Thiago Motta.

Manchester City

Record vs Italian clubs: W7 D7 L4 F27 A18
Away record vs Italian clubs: W2 D3 L3

The 0-0 draw at home to Inter on Matchday 1 made it six games unbeaten against Italian opponents (W4 D2), a sequence that includes a 1-0 defeat of the Nerazzurri in the 2023 Champions League final, since the 1-0 loss at Juve in 2015.

Before that run, City had managed three wins in 12 games against Italian opponents (D5 L4).

City's last game in Italy was a 1-1 draw at Atalanta in the 2019/20 group stage. The Cityzens failed to win in their first four games away to Serie A sides (D2 L2) but have two victories in their subsequent four visits (D1 L1).

This is City's 14th successive season in the Champions League; they have featured in every campaign since 2011/12 and have reached the knockout stages in each of the last 11.

Having claimed the club's first Champions League title in 2022/23, Pep Guardiola's side won all six group games for the first time last season, the seventh successive season in which City had come first in their group.

City then brushed past Copenhagen in the round of 16 (3-1 a, 3-1 h) but lost an epic quarter-final against eventual champions Real Madrid (3-3 a, 1-1 h, 3-4 pens) – the third season in a row in which they had faced the Spanish side.

The Cityzens have won 20 of their last 36 away European matches (D10 L6), including 4-0 at Slovan Bratislava on Matchday 2, and were unbeaten in 12 (W6 D6), since a 3-1 extra-time loss at Real Madrid in the 2021/22 semi-final second leg, before going down 4-1 at Sporting CP on Matchday 4.

Guardiola's side claimed a fourth successive Premier League title in 2023/24 – a new English record – but lost to neighbours Manchester United in the FA Cup final to miss out on a second successive double.
