Record vs German clubs: W2 D1 L3 F6 A11
Home record vs German clubs: W2 D0 L1

Slovan's last games against a team from Germany were those fixtures against Stuttgart.

The Slovakian club lost to Borussia Dortmund in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup second round (2-1 h, 0-3 a) and Kaiserslautern in the first round of the same competition the following season (2-1 h, 0-3 a).

This is the first time Slovan have featured in the Champions League proper. Indeed, they are only the fourth Slovakian club to appear, after Košice (1997/98), Petržalka (2005/06) and Žilina (2010/11).

Slovan made their 12th appearance in Champions League qualifying – and a sixth in succession – this season, coming through four qualifying rounds. They beat Struga in the first (4-2 h, 2-1 a), Celje in the second (1-1 a, 5-0 h) and APOEL in the third (2-0 h, 0-0 a). That set up a play-off against Midtjylland, and after a 1-1 first-leg draw in Denmark, Slovan triumphed 3-2 in Bratislava thanks to late goals from Marko Tolić (82) and Tigran Barseghyan (86).

Slovan are one of five clubs to be making their Champions League debuts in 2024/25, along with Aston Villa, Brest, Bologna and Girona.

In 2023/24, the Bratislava side came through two qualifying rounds before losing to Maccabi Haifa in the third (2-5 aggregate) to move into the Europa League qualifying play-offs, where they went out 4-7 on aggregate against Aris Limassol. That sent them into the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they eventually lost to Sturm Graz in the knockout round play-offs (1-5 agg).

Slovan won their first four home European matches this season – scoring 14 goals – as many as in their previous 13 games (D6 L3), before losing to Manchester City (0-4), GNK Dinamo Zagreb (1-4) and AC Milan (2-3) in the league phase.

The Sky Blues claimed their 30th league title in 2023/24.

Stuttgart

Record vs Slovakian clubs: W4 D2 L0 F12 A6
Away record vs Slovakian clubs: W2 D 1L0

Stuttgart have not played a Slovakian team since their 2010 games against Slovan.

That extended their unbeaten record against clubs from Slovakia; they beat Tatran Prešov 8-4 on aggregate in the 1973/74 UEFA Cup second round (3-1 h, 5-3 a) and Spartak Trnava 1-0 in the 1986/87 European Cup Winners' Cup first round (1-0 h, 0-0 a).

This is Stuttgart's fourth appearance in the Champions League proper and a first since 2009/10.

In that most recent appearance 15 seasons ago, Stuttgart were second in their section behind Sevilla to reach the round of 16, where they were eliminated by holders Barcelona (1-1 h, 0-4 a).

Stuttgart have won three of their 14 away games in the Champions League proper, including 1-0 at Juventus on Matchday 3. They have lost eight, going down 1-3 at Real Madrid and, on Matchday 5, 1-5 at Crvena Zvezda this season.

The German club are taking part in European competition for the first time since 2013/14, when their Europa League campaign lasted two ties. They beat Botev Plovdiv on away goals in the third qualifying round (1-1 a, 0-0 h) but then lost out to Rijeka in the qualifying play-offs (1-2 a, 2-2 h).

Sebastian Hoeneß guided Stuttgart to second place in the 2023/24 Bundesliga – his first full season in charge having taken over in April 2023. It was the Swabians' highest finish since winning the last of their five league titles in 2006/07.
