Barcelona seize night of high drama
Raphinha's last-gasp winner completed Barcelona's dramatic comeback against Benfica, as the Spanish side claimed their sixth consecutive victory in an action-packed nine-goal thriller.
It was a "crazy match" according to Robert Lewandowski, the competition's leading scorer, after a contest that featured a hat-trick, three penalties, an own goal and a red card. Vangelis Pavlidis' 30-minute treble had Hansi Flick's men 3-1 down at half-time but Barça began their fightback with Raphinha's unusual header, only for Ronald Araújo's own goal to restore Benfica's supremacy.
Lewandowski kept his composure to convert his second penalty – after his first in the 13th minute – before substitute Eric García headed in an 86th-minute equaliser. A frantic end-to-end finale was capped when the jet-heeled Raphinha had the final say, breaking free to fire the clincher in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
"We know our potential [...] we know we can always turn it around," said the Brazilian, with Barça having now secured late wins in their last two Champions League matches. They remain second in the table.
Bologna's historic Champions League night
Two goals in two minutes sealed Champions League debutants Bologna's first-ever victory in the competition, as they defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1. "These lads wanted this win at all costs [...] they needed to give this gift to the fans," revealed Bologna coach Vincenzo Italiano.
Despite trailing to Serhou Guirassy's Panenka-style penalty inside 15 minutes, the Italian side remained positive, creating opportunities. Their moment arrived in the 71st minute when substitute Thijs Dallinga levelled from close range, eight minutes after his introduction. A minute later, fellow replacement Samuel Iling-Junior pounced on Dallinga's saved effort, swiping home to flip the game and send the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara into raptures.
"To win at the Dall'Ara in front of our fans is beautiful. Now we celebrate and enjoy the victory. We know it is a historic victory for Bologna – I am proud to have been part of it," said forward Jens Odgaard.
Although their elimination from the competition was confirmed, Italiano – who led Fiorentina to UEFA Conference League finals in 2023 and 2024 – said: "It's a dream come true and I am so happy, it's beyond words."
Barcola sparks stunning Paris comeback
The Parc des Princes erupted as Gonçalo Ramos' added-time strike capped a remarkable Paris recovery to sink Manchester City 4-2.
"The fans pushed us until the end," praised Paris midfielder Vitinha, as both teams fought desperately for three crucial points with a knockout phase play-off place at stake as the final round of league phase matches loomed.
Paris looked in trouble after conceding twice in four minutes shortly after half-time. However, Bradley Barcola inspired a rapid turnaround, first setting up Ousmane Dembélé to pull one back, then netting the equaliser on the hour mark. With the momentum firmly in their favour, Paris kept up the pressure. João Neves swooped to head in Vitinha's devilish free-kick in the 78th minute, before Gonçalo Ramos rubber-stamped the victory – scoring Paris' 300th goal in the Champions League proper.
"This team won't ever give up," declared Paris coach Luis Enrique, hailing their "complete performance". They sit 22nd in the table ahead of their Matchday 8 showdown with fellow qualification hopefuls Stuttgart.
Alvarez drives gritty Atleti turnaround
Atleti's fightback triumph was "not a coincidence", said match winner Julián Alvarez, who highlighted "sacrifice, believing until the end, and teamwork" as the keys to their 2-1 success over Leverkusen.
Largely dominated in the first half after Pablo Barrios was dismissed in the 23rd minute, Diego Simeone's men entered the second period 1-0 behind. However, the Atleti coach stayed confident in his side's ability to "know how to suffer and read the game".
Sparked by a counterattack from their own penalty area, a long ball found Alvarez, who charged goalwards to draw the Spanish team level on 52 minutes. In the final minute, Ángel Correa pounced on a loose ball and teed up Alvarez, who skipped past Matěj Kovář and slotted in the winner, guaranteeing Atleti's place in at least the knockout phase play-offs.
"[We] pulled through," assessed Alvarez on the eighth time this season (in all competitions) that Atleti have come from behind to win with a late goal.
