Form guide

Celtic

Record vs German clubs: W5 D5 L20 F24 A53
Home record vs German clubs: W5 D2 L8

Celtic have already played two fixtures against German opponents in this season's Champions League, losing 7-1 at Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 2 before a 3-1 home defeat of Leipzig.

That Matchday 4 success ended Celtic's run of five successive defeats against Bundesliga opponents, with four goals scored and 19 conceded.

A 2-1 UEFA Europa League group stage win against Leipzig in November 2018 is Celtic's only other victory in their last 17 games against German opponents (D3 L12) and one of only two in the last ten they have not lost.

At home, the Hoops have lost five of the last seven, most recently a 0-2 defeat by Leipzig in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.

Celtic's last 16 games against German opponents have come in the group stage/league phase. This is their first knockout tie since a 5-4 aggregate win against Stuttgart in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup fourth round that made their two-legged record against Bundesliga clubs W2 L5.

Celtic are in the Champions League proper for the 13th time, two more than local rivals Rangers, and the third season in a row.

The Hoops were bottom of their section for the second season running – and the fourth time in their last five campaigns – in 2023/24, although they ended with a 2-1 home win against Feyenoord, their first Champions League victory at Celtic Park since 2013.

That ended Celtic's run of 12 home group games without a win (D3 L9), since beating Ajax 2-1 on Matchday 4 in 2013/14. This season's wins against Slovan Bratislava (5-1), and Leipzig made it three in a row for the first time since 2007 before a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge and, on Matchday 7, a 1-0 defeat of Young Boys.

Home and away, Celtic have won only six of their last 40 games in the Champions League proper (D9 L25) – but four of the last nine.

The first British club to win the European Cup in 1967, and runners-up to Feyenoord three years later, Celtic have reached the knockout stages three times. All those campaigns ended in the round of 16, most recently in 2012/13 against Juventus (0-3 h, 0-2 a).

Celtic claimed their 54th Scottish League title, and a 12th in 13 seasons, in 2023/24, Brendan Rodgers' side also winning the Scottish Cup, the Hoops' record 42nd victory.

Bayern

Record vs Scottish teams: W10 D6 L3 F29 A15
Away record vs Scottish teams: W3 D3 L3

Those 2017 games against Celtic are Bayern's last against a team from Scotland.

Bayern lost their first three matches in Scotland but are unbeaten in the subsequent six (W3 D3).

The German club have won their last three games against Scottish opponents and are unbeaten in 13 (W9 D4), since a 1-0 loss at Hearts in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg – a tie Bayern went on to win 2-1 on aggregate.

Bayern's last knockout tie against a Scottish club was a 7-3 aggregate success against Aberdeen in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 32 (2-2 a, 5-1 h), making their record in two-legged ties W4 L2 with wins in the last four.

The Munich club's first game against Scottish opponents was a 1-0 defeat of Rangers in the 1967 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Nuremberg.

Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds in each one of those campaigns, losing to Real Madrid in last season's semi-finals.

The six-time European champions have reached the quarter-finals or better in 12 of their last 13 Champions League campaigns, the exception a last-16 elimination by Liverpool in 2018/19.

This is Bayern's 28th campaign in the Champions League proper, level with Porto and fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 29).

A 0-1 defeat at Aston Villa on Matchday 2 this season ended Bayern's record unbeaten run of 41 Champions League group/league phase matches (W37 D4).

Defeats at Villa, Barcelona (1-4) – making it three successive away European losses, a club first – and, on Matchday 7, Feyenoord (0-3) this season have made it seven in Bayern's last 39 away Champions League matches (W25 D7); they won 5-1 at Shakhtar Donetsk on Matchday 6.

A side coached by Thomas Tuchel were third behind Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart in the 2023/24 Bundesliga. It was the first time Bayern had failed to win the title since 2011/12 and their lowest league placing since 2010/11, when they were also third.

Tuchel was replaced by Vincent Kompany in the summer.
