Inter welcome Barcelona to San Siro for the second leg of what is shaping up to be a titanic UEFA Champions League semi-final with the tie poised at 3-3.
The two former European champions played out an epic first installment at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on 30 April, Marcus Thuram giving the visitors the lead after 30 seconds – the fastest goal in a Champions League semi-final. Denzel Dumfries doubled the advantage in the 21st minute but Barça were back on terms by half-time through Lamine Yamal (24) – making him, aged 17 years 291 days, the youngest semi-final scorer – and Ferran Torres (38). Dumfries restored Inter's lead in the 64th minute only for Raphinha's shot to rebound in off Yann Sommer 60 seconds later and ensure the teams head to Italy all square.
Inter – runners-up in 2023 – were European champions for a third time in 2010, beating Barcelona in a memorable semi-final, while Barça – in the last four for the first time since 2019 – are bidding to reach the final for the first time since claiming their fifth European Cup in 2015,

Inter’s interest in the 2023/24 Champions League was ended by Spanish opponents in their most recent fixtures against a Liga club before this tie, a 2-1 second-leg defeat at Atlético de Madrid – in which Federico Dimarco had given them the lead, making it 2-0 on aggregate – preceding a 2-3 defeat on penalties in the round of 16.
The first-leg win against Atlético is one of only three Inter wins in their last 19 games against Liga clubs (D5 L11), a run that also includes a 3-2 reverse against Sevilla in the 2020 UEFA Europa League final in Cologne.
Last season's defeat of Atleti was also only Inter's third victory in ten games against Liga visitors at San Siro (D4 L3).
The Nerazzurri's record against Spanish clubs in two-legged knockout ties is W5 L10, the 2010 elimination of Barcelona their sole victory in the last four.
This is Inter's second Champions League semi-final in three years, and a fourth overall. They are in the last four of the European Cup for a tenth time overall.
The Nerazzurri have won their last two semi-finals, a 3-0 aggregate defeat of neighbours AC Milan in 2022/23 (2-0 a, 1-0 h) making their overall record at this stage W6 L3.
Simone Inzaghi's side were runners-up to Manchester City in the 2023 final, losing 1-0 in Istanbul – Inter's most successful Champions League campaign since lifting the trophy in 2010.
Inter were fourth in this season's league phase (W6 D1 L1) before beating Feyenoord (2-0 a, 2-1 h) and Bayern (2-1 a, 2-2 h) in the knockout stage.
Inter have won 15 of their last 28 home Champions League games (D8 L5) and 14 of their last 19 (D3 L2), including against Crvena Zvezda (4-0), Arsenal and Leipzig (both 1-0), Monaco (3-0) and Feyenoord (2-1) this season before a 2-2 second-leg draw with Bayern München completed a 4-3 aggregate win.
Inter have been victorious in 15 of the 21 UEFA competition ties in which they have recorded a first-leg away draw although they lost the last, against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018/19 UFA Europa League round of 16 (1-1 a, 0-1 h). When the first leg has finished 3-3 they lost to Alavés in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup fourth round (0-2 h) but beat Celtic in the 2014/15 Europa League round of 32 (1-0 h).
Inter's record in five UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W2 L3:

The Spanish side have won three of their last six games in Italy (D2 L1).

Barça have lost three of their last four semi-finals, including the most recent, against Liverpool in 2018/19 (3-0 h, 0-4 a).

Second behind Liverpool in this season's league phase (W6 D1 L1), Barcelona beat Benfica in the round of 16 (1-0 a, 3-1 h) and Dortmund in the quarter-finals (4-0 h, 1-3 a).
