Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven are both looking for their first victory in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League when they meet in Germany on Matchday 2.
Last match
The teams' only previous meetings came in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup first round, a 5-4 home win for Leverkusen followed by a 0-0 draw in Eindhoven.
Leverkusen are unbeaten in their seven matches against Dutch teams (W4 D3) – most recently a 4-0 victory at Feyenoord on Matchday 1 last season – winning all three at home.
PSV's last games against Bundesliga opponents came in the 2023/24 round of 16, when they went out 1-3 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund (1-1 h, 0-2 a). That second-leg loss made it one win in their 20 games away to German clubs (D4 L15) and none since a 2-1 victory at Eintracht Braunschweig in the UEFA Cup third round in December 1977.
Leverkusen are featuring in the Champions League proper for the 15th time – although only the fourth in nine seasons.
In 2024/25 a team coached by Xabi Alonso finished sixth in the league phase (W5 D1 L2) only to lose an all-German last-16 tie to Bayern München (0-3 a, 0-2 h).
Alonso departed for Real Madrid in the summer, his replacement Erik ten Hag himself making way for Kasper Hjulmand, who was appointed on 8 September.
Dutch champions for the 26th time – and second season in succession – in 2024/25, PSV are in the Champions League proper for the 19th time, a national record they share with Ajax.
Peter Bosz's side were 14th in last season's league phase (W4 D2 L2) and beat Juventus in the knockout phase play-offs (1-2 a, 3-1 h aet) – their first victory in a knockout tie since 2006/07 – but were then defeated by Arsenal in the round of 16 (1-7 h, 2-2 a).

A 2-2 draw at Copenhagen on Matchday 1 means Leverkusen have lost only two of their last 17 European group stage/league phase matches (W11 D4), keeping nine clean sheets in the last 16.
Die Werkself have won 14 of their last 16 home European group stage/league phase games (D1 L1), including the last seven – and all four last season without conceding.
A 1-3 home loss against debutants Union Saint-Gilloise on Matchday 1 was only PSV's third in 14 Champions League group stage/league phase matches (W6 D5).
PSV have won only two of their last 11 European away games (D4 L5).
