Marseille and Atalanta both have a single win to their names in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League as they meet at the Stade Vélodrome on Matchday 4.

Last match

The clubs' only previous meetings came in the semi-finals of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in France in which Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring for the visitors, Atalanta reached the final with a 3-0 home win, Ademola Lookman getting the first goal.

That made it nine matches without a win against Italian teams for Marseille (D3 L6), since a 1-0 home victory against Inter in the 2011/12 Champions League round of 16 first leg.

A 4-0 loss at holders Paris Saint-Germain on Matchday 1 meant Atalanta have won two of their six games against French clubs (D2 L2) – and none in France, where their record is D2 L1.

Marseille

This is Marseille's 12th Champions League campaign, but only a third in the last 12 seasons. They have not progressed to the knockout rounds since reaching the quarter-finals in 2011/12.

OM were not involved in UEFA competition in 2024/25 having reached the Europa League semi-finals in 2023/24.

Atalanta

Atalanta are taking part in the Champions League proper for the fifth time – all since 2019 – in 2025/26.

The Bergamo club were ninth in last season's league phase (W4 D3 L1) before losing 2-5 on aggregate to Club Brugge in the knockout phase play-offs.

Key stats

A 4-0 home win against Ajax on Matchday 2 was Marseille's biggest victory in the Champions League proper since a 7-0 triumph at Žilina in November 2010.

OM went down 2-1 at Real Madrid in their first fixture and 2-1 at Sporting CP last time out to make it 20 defeats in their last 24 matches in the Champions League proper (W4).

Marseille have lost only two of their last 20 home European games (W13 D5) and are unbeaten in nine, winning seven.

Having drawn 0-0 at home to Slavia Praha on Matchday 3, Atalanta have now lost only two of their last 17 European group stage/league phase matches (W9 D6).

The draw against Slavia was Atalanta's seventh clean sheet in their last 12 group stage/league phase games in UEFA competition.
