Qarabağ will look to return to winning ways against the only side still without a point in this season's UEFA Champions League as Ajax come to Azerbaijan on Matchday 6.

Last match

The teams' only previous fixture came in the league phase of last season's UEFA Europa League, Kenneth Taylor scoring Ajax's first goal and Wout Weghorst, with a penalty, the second in a 3-0 Matchday 3 win in Baku.

Qarabağ are winless in their five matches against Dutch teams (D3 L2), scoring two goals and conceding seven.

Last season's win at Qarabağ is Ajax's only fixture against a club from Azerbaijan.

Qarabağ

This is Qarabağ's second participation in the Champions League proper, following their group stage appearance in 2017/18, when they were fourth in a section including Chelsea, Atlético de Madrid and Roma, both their points coming from draws against the Spanish side. They are the only team from Azerbaijan to feature.

This is Qarabağ's 12th successive season in a UEFA group stage/league phase. They lost seven of their eight games (W1) in last season's Europa League to finish in 36th place in the league phase.

Ajax

This is Ajax's 19th appearance in the Champions League proper – a Dutch record they share with PSV Eindhoven – and a first since 2022/23.

The Amsterdammers were 12th in the league phase of the 2024/25 Europa League, eventually losing to Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 16 (1-2 h, 1-4 a).

Ajax parted company with coach John Heitinga on 6 November, assistant Fred Grim replacing him on an interim basis.

Key stats

A 2-0 defeat at Italian champions Napoli on Matchday 5 was Qarabağ's third in their 11 European games this season (W7 D1). They drew 2-2 at home to Chelsea on Matchday 4 and have won three of the five at home (D1 L1).

The loss in Naples was the first European game in which Qarabağ had failed to score in 2025/26.

The Horsemen beat Benfica (3-2 a) and Copenhagen (2-0 h) in their first two games in this season's league phase; they had never previously won a match in the Champions League proper. Their record since is D1 L2.

Qarabağ have scored at least twice in each of their last four home European games.

Beaten 0-2 at home by Benfica – who had also lost their first four fixtures – on Matchday 5, Ajax remain the only team without a point in this season's league phase.

The Dutch club have lost their last eight European games – the longest run in the club's history – and nine of the last ten in the Champions League group stage/league phase (W1).

Ajax's 16 goals conceded in the first five matches was the most in the league phase.

Ajax have scored 397 European Cup goals.
