How Matchday 8 works

• The Fantasy deadline is Wednesday 28 January at 21:00 CET, when all 18 fixtures kick off.

• Starting line-ups for every team will therefore be available prior to the deadline, meaning Fantasy managers will know when selecting players if they are involved in the game.

• Post-deadline, there will be no opportunity to make manual changes to your squads. Automatic substitutions will only take effect if one or more of the players in your starting XI do not play.

• Only one captain can be selected on Matchday 8.

Chip use

For those managers who still have chips, Matchday 8 could represent the best remaining opportunity to deploy them, especially as unlimited transfers are granted ahead of the knockout phase play-off first legs as well as the start of the round of 16.

Limitless
The lack of budget restraints and unlimited free transfers is always welcome. However, the fact that you can only use 11 players in your squad rather than the usual 15 means that you may not get the full benefits of using this chip compared to other matchdays.

Wildcard
In theory, the Wildcard is almost as powerful as the Limitless on Matchday 8 due to the fact that you can select the cheapest possible players for your bench. This allows you to use the majority of your funds for your starting XI.

One captain

With no option to change this time around, Matchday 8 could represent the most important captaincy decision of the season. Be sure to check out our leading candidates for the Fantasy armband.

For managers who are playing catch-up in their mini-leagues, the availability of the starting line-ups should reveal some tempting differentials, but remember that you will not be able to select another player after the deadline.

Team selection

A key aspect of Fantasy is the ability to make manual changes between fixtures, but Matchday 8 offers a unique opportunity to focus solely on the 11 players you will start with.

The availability of starting line-ups for all Matchday 8 fixtures ahead of kick-off is a huge advantage to Fantasy managers, who will be able to pick players they know are starting.

With bench players not required, the majority of funds can be spent on your starting players, allowing more premium options to be selected.

While many will be tempted to focus on players from teams whose qualification fate is yet to be determined, potential rotation amongst other teams could offer Fantasy bosses the opportunity to select some high-performing differentials.

As previously mentioned, unlimited transfers will be granted following the completion of the league phase, so Fantasy managers can focus solely on Matchday 8 when it comes to team selection.

What can be learned from 2024/25?

Last season was the first of the current league phase format, so Fantasy managers got their first taste of a matchday where all 36 teams played at the same time.

Only six of the 36 teams kept clean sheets on Matchday 8 in 2024/25, with a number of high-scoring games. There were 64 goals scored overall – an average of 3.6 per match.

There were some noteworthy Fantasy hauls, three players scoring hat-tricks – Morgan Rogers, Lautaro Martínez and Ousmane Dembélé. All three came for teams whose league position in either the top eight (Aston Villa and Inter) or the top 24 (Paris Saint-Germain) was in the balance at kick-off.

There was notable rotation from teams who were guaranteed to finish in the top eight, with Arsenal and particularly Liverpool choosing to field several fringe players for their final league phase fixtures.
