Bayern München are within touching distance of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals again as Atalanta travel to Germany for the round of 16 second leg facing a 6-1 deficit.

The German side, who are at this stage for the 18th season in succession, took a firm grip on the tie in Bergamo on 10 March thanks to goals from Josip Stanišić (12), Michael Olise (22 64), Serge Gnabry (25), Nicolas Jackson (52) and Jamal Musiala (67), Mario Pašalić scoring Atalanta's consolation (90+3).

That was Bayern's eighth win in nine games in this season's competition (L1). They were second in the league phase; their Italian opponents were 15th before mounting a memorable comeback to oust Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the knockout phase play-offs (0-2 a, 4-1 h).

Last match

The first leg was the teams' first meeting.

Bayern have lost only two of their last 17 games against Italian sides (W12 D3).

The German club's interest in last season's Champions League was ended by a quarter-final defeat against Inter (1-2 h, 2-2 a). That made their record in two-legged ties with Serie A sides W7 L7.

Bayern's first-leg defeat by Inter last season ended a seven‑match home winning streak against Italian visitors.

The first leg was only Atalanta's fourth defeat in their 14 European games against German opposition (W7 D3); the second-leg win against Dortmund had been their fourth in the last six (L2).

Atalanta's away record against German teams is W3 D2 L2.

La Dea have won three of their five two legged European ties against Bundesliga clubs.

Bayern

Bayern have featured in the Champions League proper in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds every time. This is their 29th campaign, fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 30).

Twelfth in last season's league phase (W5 L3), the German club eventually lost 3-4 on aggregate to Inter in the quarter-finals.

Atalanta

Atalanta are taking part in the Champions League proper for the fifth time – all since 2019.

The Bergamo club were ninth in last season's league phase (W4 D3 L1) before losing 2-5 on aggregate to Club Brugge in the knockout phase play-offs.

Key stats

Bayern have featured in the round of 16 in every season since 2008/09 and are aiming for a 36th European Cup quarter-final.

The Munich club have won 13 of their last 14 last-16 ties, including six in a row since a 2018/19 defeat by Liverpool (0-0 a, 1-3 h). They beat fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen at this stage in 2024/25 (3-0 h, 2-0 a).

Bayern have lost only two of their last 25 round of 16 matches (W18 D5) and have won ten of the last 11 at home (L1).

The Bundesliga champions have won 28 of their 29 European ties after an away first-leg victory, including all four in which they triumphed by a five-goal margin in the first game.

Bayern have never lost by more than four goals in UEFA competition.

The German side have lost only one of their last 27 home Champions League matches (W21 D5), winning all four this season.

Jamal Musiala has three goals in his last four Champions League appearances.

Harry Kane has scored 48 goals in the Champions League; no English player has ever reached 50. An unused substitute in the first leg, he has eight goals in eight Champions League games this season.

Atalanta are in the round of 16 for the first time since 2020/21, when they were beaten 4-1 on aggregate by Real Madrid (0-1 h, 1-3 a). Their only other appearance at this stage came in 2019/20, when they defeated Valencia 8-4 over two legs (4-1 h, 4-3 a).

The first leg of this tie equalled Atalanta's biggest European defeat and was the first time they had conceded six goals in a UEFA match.

Atalanta have lost the home first leg of a European tie only once previously – against Real Madrid in 2021.

The Serie A side have lost four of their last five Champions League matches (W1).

Pašalić's first-leg strike made him the first player to score ten Champions League goals for Atalanta.
