"He is the ultimate connector. He bridges the gap between defence and attack, and he does it with a smile and a level of tactical discipline that's truly rare in the game today."
Those words of praise came from UEFA Technical Observer Edin Terzić and they were aimed at Antoine Griezmann after a Champions League semi-final first-leg performance against Arsenal which exhibited the enduring excellence of Atlético de Madrid's all-time leading scorer.
On his final home appearance in the competition prior to his summer move to Orlando City, the 35-year-old delivered a Player of the Match display that forms the focus of the following analysis, brought to you by FedEx.
Griezmann's wonderful passing and movement
The video shows Griezmann at work during Wednesday night's 1-1 draw, both making play and getting on the end of opportunities himself.
Clip one highlights his passing ability with a reverse ball to Julián Alvarez in the lead-up to an Ademola Lookman effort. Reflecting on the Frenchman’s ability to affect a game in different areas, Terzić, who faced him as coach of Borussia Dortmund, said: “When you prepare a match plan against a player like him, you realise very quickly that you cannot 'mark' him out of the game, because he's constantly moving between the lines of your structure.
"He has an incredible sense of space. He knows exactly when to drop into the half-spaces to create a numerical superiority in midfield and exactly when the defensive line is preoccupied enough for him to ghost into the box."
Clip two illustrates both of these attributes prior to a goal attempt foiled by a fantastic block by Gabriel.
Selflessness and elite mentality
Wednesday's match was the first of Atleti's European campaign in which Griezmann played from start to finish. Coach Diego Simeone admitted he had thought of taking him off at one point but then "he started to find spaces to do something different".
Indeed, as clip three shows, Griezmann, Atleti's semi hero when they reached the 2016 final, came as close as anyone to grabbing a winning goal.
Reflecting on his impact on his 121st Champions League appearance, Terzić added: "What I admire most is his selflessness. Griezmann plays for the badge on the front of the shirt, not the name on the back.
"Even when he isn't scoring, he’s occupying defenders, blocking passing lines and coaching his team-mates. To see a World Cup winner slide-tackling in his own penalty area in the 85th minute and then sprinting to lead a counterattack – that's the elite mentality every coach wants to instil in their team."
Terzić on why Griezmann is a "total footballer"
• Tactical intelligence – "Incredible sense of space"
• Technical efficiency – "One-touch master"
• Team commitment – "Engine of a box-to-box midfielder"
