"The margins are so small and tonight they've gone for us." With that reflection, Mikel Arteta acknowledged the thin line dividing Arsenal and Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final decider in north London.
The fact it was Arsenal celebrating a 1-0 win at the end and rejoicing in reaching their second Champions League final – 20 years after their first – was down to "small details" according to UEFA Technical Observer Rui Faria.
As the following analysis, brought to you by FedEx, will highlight, they had players anticipating and reacting at crucial moments – notably Player of the Match Declan Rice and scoring hero Bukayo Saka.
Influential with and without the ball, Rice "stood out for his positional awareness and decision-making" according to Faria and he was in the right place to make the crucial block from Giuliano Simeone that we see featured in the first clip above.
Faria added: "We can see Rice tracking Atleti's movement, adjusting his position and communicating with his team-mates to maintain their organisation. His intelligent positioning allows him to stay close to the action and ultimately block the shot."
It was one of several key contributions from the Arsenal midfielder on a night he won five of seven duels and completed the most passes (56) of any player on the pitch.
If Rice's response to a rebound – from his own goalkeeper, David Raya – spared Arsenal from conceding an early goal, Saka's reaction to a rebound at the other end won them the game.
As with Rice, Saka earned praise from Faria for his awareness, positioning and anticipation as he got to the loose ball first after goalkeeper Jan Oblak had stopped Leandro Trossard's shot in the 44th minute.
"The way Saka responds to the rebound from the goalkeeper reflects his awareness of the moment," explained Faria. "His quick reaction is closely linked to his focus and concentration. In addition, the way he positions himself inside the box, between defenders, makes him very difficult to mark."
Saka, who was in coach Arteta's first-ever Arsenal line-up in December 2019, told Amazon Prime: "In those situations, I just try and stay alive. Sometimes it bounces for you and sometimes it doesn't but you have to be there and I was there and it fell for me and I got my goal." And with it, Arsenal their ticket to Budapest.
"Saka anticipates the rebound from the goalkeeper before others react, demonstrating his constant reading of the game and intelligent positional adjustment."
Rui Faria worked as assistant to José Mourinho, winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League at Porto, multiple domestic titles with Chelsea and Real Madrid, the 2009/10 Champions League with Inter and then the 2016/17 Europa League with Manchester United.
