Coach: Martín Demichelis
Former Argentina centre-back Demichelis spent the majority of his playing career at Bayern, where he won four Bundesliga titles and four German Cups. He began his coaching journey as an assistant at Málaga before taking up the top roles at River Plate, Monterrey and Mallorca. He joined Leipzig to replace Ole Werner in June and will be managing in the Champions League for the first time.
Key player: Christoph Baumgartner
The Austrian midfielder comes into this season off the back of the most prolific campaign of his career, having scored 17 goals in 37 league and cup games last term. As important creatively as he is as a goalscorer, the former Hoffenheim star was the 2024 Austrian Football of the Year and boasts 19 goals in 58 games for his country heading into this season.
Big summer signing: Maxime Estève
The 24-year-old centre-back made his name initially at Montpellier before turning out 100 times in two and a half years at Burnley. A commanding aerial presence, the French defender is also blessed with excellent awareness and composure in possession.
One to watch: Antonio Nusa
An electric and unpredictable dribbler, Nusa was just 17 years old when he scored on his Champions League debut for Club Brugge in September 2022. A regular starter and a two-time champion in Belgium by the time of his August 2024 move to Leipzig, Nusa has continued to grow his reputation in Germany and on the international stage, where he recently helped Norway reach the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

A 6-0 loss to Bayern on the opening day of the season augured ill for new coach Ole Werner, but Leipzig rallied and earned a respectable third-placed Bundesliga finish to return to the Champions League.
