With a focus on those who finished in the top 5,000 last season, UEFA.com outlines some key ingredients for success in UCL Fantasy, presented by PlayStation.
Use your chips in the league phase
The vast majority of seasoned Fantasy managers choose to use their chips in the league phase, when there are more fixtures and more potential for high scores. Being aggressive early on was a clear approach for the top 5,000 managers in 2025/26, with Matchday 2 the most popular time to use the Wildcard (21.9%). Over a quarter of the elite managers deployed the Limitless chip on Matchday 5 – the most popular window for that chip – while 17% were patient enough to save that booster for the final round of league phase fixtures, when all starting line-ups are revealed before the deadline.
Very few of the elite managers saved their chips for the knockout stage, but Matchday 17 – the final – proved to be the most common for both the Wildcard (2.9%) and Limitless (3.8%) in this respect.
When did the top 5,000 use their chips in 2025/26?
| Matchday | Playing Limitless | Playing Wildcard |
| 1 | N/A | N/A |
| 2 | 16.7% | 21.9% |
| 3 | 4.3% | 13.7% |
| 4 | 14.8% | 12.5% |
| 5 | 25.4% | 19.3% |
| 6 | 6.4% | 10.3% |
| 7 | 6.3% | 3.8% |
| 8 | 17.0% | 6.3% |
| 9 | N/A | N/A |
| 10 | 0.2% | 0.1% |
| 11 | N/A | N/A |
| 12 | 0.8% | 0.4% |
| 13 | 0.3% | 2.0% |
| 14 | 0.6% | 0.3% |
| 15 | 0.3% | 2.8% |
| 16 | 0.5% | 0.6% |
| 17 | 3.8% | 2.9% |
With Matchday 4 coming next for UCL Fantasy managers, it will be interesting to see if this season follows suit in terms of chip usage.
Engage with your team
While less than 15% of the 1.9 million total Fantasy managers last season used both the Wildcard and Limitless boosters, over 95% of the top 5k played both chips, which illustrates how integral they can be to a successful rank. When we compare other metrics, the differences are also vast:
Average % of managers who changed their captain between gamedays
Overall: 9.8%
Top 5k: 57.9%
Average % of managers who made manual substitutions between gamedays
Overall: 20.5%
Top 5k: 97.7%
Once again, it is clear that the elite managers are more frequently engaged with their teams. On average, over half of the top 5,000 switched their captain after the opening night of a matchday, choosing to move to another player in an attempt to obtain a higher score.
In terms of manual substitutions, the percentage of the top 5,000 making active changes on any given matchday never dipped below 95%. The top managers made full use of their squads and set their line-ups accordingly so that they maximised the points gained from their 15 players.
Flexibility with the armband
While forwards were most commonly captained by the elite managers overall, certain matchdays were different and the pattern changed as the season progressed. Forwards were the top choice at the start of all eight league phase matchdays, but midfielders became the preferred option in six of the remaining nine matchdays. This clearly highlights an ability within the top managers to adapt to the points distribution among Fantasy players.
Kylian Mbappé was the most popular captain throughout 2025/26, the Real Madrid forward the top choice on five separate matchdays among the top 5,000 managers, although all of those occasions occurred in the league phase.
Fantasy midfielders recorded a matchday total of 20 points or more on six occasions across the season; this only occurred once among forwards.
Minimise points hits
It was rare for the top 5,000 managers to go beyond their free transfer allowance and take points hits. In fact, an average of just 12.3% of those making transfers incurred point deductions on any given matchday, compared to 21.1% among the full cohort of managers. This shows that careful planning and squad management can reduce the need to make major changes further down the road.
Of course, sometimes widespread changes are unavoidable. A total of 34.7% elite managers exceeded their free transfer allowance on Matchday 8, when all starting line-ups were available. At this stage, most high-ranked Fantasy managers had already used both of their chips.
