Fernando nurses wounded knee

Real Betis Balompié are resigned to being without midfielder Fernando Fernández for six weeks following surgery on his troubled left knee.

Underlying problems
The 26-year-old midfielder has had an operation to cure a cartilage problem and, after finding no additional damage to the ligaments in his knee, doctors predict he will be out of action for a month and a half.

Complete rest
Fernando therefore misses both legs of Betis's UEFA Cup last-32 tie against AZ Alkmaar on 15 and 23 February, as he must rest completely for three weeks. He has played 12 league games this season and a further five in the UEFA Champions League.
