Torino FC recorded their first win in five trips to Spain and became the first Italian club to win at San Mamés as they booked their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 16.

The visitors secured progress thanks to a 3-2 triumph in a pulsating encounter in Bilbao, completing a 5-4 aggregate victory to ensure they will watch Friday's draw with interest.

The second leg nonetheless began in cagey fashion, with the tie delicately poised at the halfway stage following a 2-2 draw in Turin. And it was Athletic – renowned for their threat from set pieces – who first went close, when Beñat forced Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli into an excellent save from a free-kick.

The visitors subsequently took the lead at the other end after being awarded a penalty, which. Fabio Quagliarella stepped up to take on 16 minutes. Recalled to the side after he was surprisingly left out of the opener, Quagliarella rewarded coach Giampiero Ventura for his renewed faith by firing Torino in front.

The hosts responded with a fine equaliser close to the interval. Beñat's clipped ball over the Torino back four found Andoni Iraola at the far post, and the defender finished in style to give his side the advantage once again. Yet their Serie A rivals would not be denied. Maxi López, who struck twice in Italy last week, found a way past Iago Herrerín once again and buried a powerful header in first-half added time.

The Italian team nearly extended their advantage after the restart. Maxi López had an effort blocked inside the area but was almost presented another chance on the rebound, only for Herrerín to pounce first. Then, three minutes later, Iñaki Williams – who scored on his European debut in the first meeting – nodded a brilliant Mikel Rico cross onto the far post with Padelli beaten.

The home side soon rewarded their passionate fans, however, as Óscar de Marcos's cool finish on 61 minutes ensured a repeat of last Thursday's 2-2 scoreline. But the Granata did not lose their nerve and responded with a fine finish of their own seven minutes later, as Matteo Darmian converted from an Omar El Kaddouri cross.

The drama was not over there either, with substitute Josef Martínez missing a glorious opportunity to seal Torino's progress when he hit the side netting after beating Herrerín. Even so, Los Leones were unable to find the two goals they needed to keep their European hopes alive.
