Roma climbed within four points of the Serie A summit on Sunday amid a clutch of notable results for the UEFA Europa League teams, with Ajax and Schalke also catching the eye.
Responding to Juventus's 3-1 loss away to Genoa earlier in the day, Roma took advantage with a narrow 3-2 success at home to Pescara, Edin Džeko scoring twice to take his tally to 13 goals in his last 11 games for the Giallorossi. The match also marked Daniele De Rossi's 400th Serie A appearance for the club.
The situation is even tighter at the top of the Eredivisie after Ajax drew level on points with fellow group stage contenders Feyenoord. The Amsterdam giants triumphed 1-0 at Heerenveen for their tenth victory in 11 league fixtures, whereas Feyenoord – who have now won just one of their last five in the division – needed two late efforts to draw 3-3 at Utrecht.
Ligue 1 leaders Nice are also feeling the pressure after dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Bastia, which was also the outcome as Manchester United took on West Ham in the Premier League. Elsewhere, Schalke moved into the top half of the Bundesliga courtesy of a tenth win in their last 12 games in all competitions, and Villarreal fell to sixth in Spain following a 2-0 home loss to Alavés.
