A meeting between former champions and past runners-up will be the highlight when the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 first legs are played on Wednesday and Thursday.

UEFA Women's Cup finalists in 2003, Danish champions Fortuna Hjørring defeated Italian side ASD Bardolino Verona 14-1 on aggregate in perhaps the result of the round of 32 but on Wednesday travel to 2009 winners FCR 2001 Duisburg, who themselves have scored 24 goals in five games this season. Duisburg's German compatriots, holders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, are at home to Austria's SV Neulengbach, while Brøndby IF and Everton are also matched in another of Wednesday's games.

The following day the other three ties get under way, with last term's runners-up Olympique Lyonnais visiting Russia's FC Rossiyanka, their French rivals FCF Juvisy Essonne away against Torres of Italy and Rayo Vallecano de Madrid welcoming 2007 champions Arsenal Ladies FC. All the round of 16 ties conclude on 10 and 11 November, with the draw for the remainder of the competition on 19 November paving the path to the final in London on 26 May.
