FC Bayern München's women's team claimed their first Frauen Bundesliga title by way of a 2-0 home victory against SGS Essen on the final day of a season they finished without suffering defeat.

Bayern started the day a point behind table-topping VfL Wolfsburg and one ahead of 1. FFC Frankfurt in third, but profited as the pair played out a 1-1 draw. The hosts took the lead in Frankfurt, Verónica Boquete scoring six minutes after kick-off, and although Martina Müller, on her last game before retirement, levelled shortly before the hour mark, a winning goal eluded the Wolves – who beat Frankfurt on the last day of last season to clinch the title.

Things went much more smoothly in Munich, where first-half goals from Melanie Leupolz and Vivianne Miedema accounted for Essen and earned an historic victory, in the process denying Wolfsburg a third straight league title.

Top two Bayern and Wolfsburg have therefore qualified for the 2015/16 UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 stage, meaning a first European campaign for Bayern since a run to the 2009/10 round of 16.

There could yet be three representatives from Germany among Europe's elite next season should Frankfurt overcome Paris Saint-Germain in Thursday's UEFA Women's Champions League final in Berlin. Wolfsburg's bid for a third straight European title was ended in the semi-finals by Paris.
