UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 contenders Zvezda-2005 won their fifth Russian league title on Sunday to wrap up a domestic double.
Zvezda won 5-0 against Chertanovo to retain their league crown on the final day of the season, finishing two points clear of Rossiyanka, who will join them in the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League. Daryna Apanaschenko, Daria Makarenko, Olesya Kurochkina and Anastasia Pozdeeva were all on the mark, Ksenia Dzhinikashvili scoring an own goal.
"After we failed to win at Ryazan-VDV in our last match, we wanted to seal the title at our own ground," said Zvezda coach Goran Aleksić. "We have a tough schedule now, still playing in the Champions League. I want to thank all the girls. Despite a big win they were committed for the whole 90 minutes. We have won the domestic league and cup but we have the most important match of the year looming."
That match is Zvezda's round of 16 second leg against Slavia Praha in Perm on Thursday. Aleksić's team trail 2-1 after the opening instalment in Prague last week.
